Fun and quick read but not too deep。

I loved this book! It was fun, witty, clever and very different from other reads I've taken on。 If you enjoy villains/evil people, cats and other animals having staring roles, adventures and twists and turns this book is for you! 4。5/5This was an incredibly fun read。 It was fast paced, hilarious, and entertaining。 There is just so much packed into this story。 I must say I never knew where the story was going to go。。。and oh did it deliver。 From volcano lairs to marine proletariats, this book packs a punch of adventure, villany, and the feeling of being thrown in the deep end, all while having a blast。 I totally recommend this to any one that wants a fun, quick read to change up their TBR。 This book can easily be read in o 4。5/5This was an incredibly fun read。 It was fast paced, hilarious, and entertaining。 There is just so much packed into this story。 I must say I never knew where the story was going to go。。。and oh did it deliver。 From volcano lairs to marine proletariats, this book packs a punch of adventure, villany, and the feeling of being thrown in the deep end, all while having a blast。 I totally recommend this to any one that wants a fun, quick read to change up their TBR。 This book can easily be read in one sitting (practically) or done in just a few days。 The audiobook also has a fantastic narrator (Wil Wheaton), for those that want to listen to it (it's what I did)。 。。。more

Beginning in Barrington Illinois and narrated by thirty-two year old Charlie Fitzer, Scalzi’s plot is a dark satire that draws inspiration from classic Bond villain: Blofeld。

Like many of Scalzi's standalone books this one was very goofy, quick, and fun to read。 The best character was definitely the cat。 I did feel like because the protagonist never knew what was going on, there was a lot of things being explained which could get a little dull。 Like many of Scalzi's standalone books this one was very goofy, quick, and fun to read。 The best character was definitely the cat。 I did feel like because the protagonist never knew what was going on, there was a lot of things being explained which could get a little dull。 。。。more

This book was a hoot! The animals involved were the best。 The journey made for an enjoyable read。 The ending was happy, though not what I was expecting。 The twist thrown in at the end was pretty good too。

A fun story。 I never could quite predict where it was going to go next。 Funny and fast-paced。The line from the book I'd offer to test whether someone might enjoy this book is "Don't swim with the dolphins during a labor dispute, no matter how much they try to convince you otherwise。" A fun story。 I never could quite predict where it was going to go next。 Funny and fast-paced。The line from the book I'd offer to test whether someone might enjoy this book is "Don't swim with the dolphins during a labor dispute, no matter how much they try to convince you otherwise。" 。。。more

I had so much fun reading this book! There was laughing out loud and sharing the funny bits with anyone who happened to be near me。 And still amidst all the humor, Scalzi manages to make very relevant and pointed jabs about issues plaguing our society。 Kind of reminds me of Christopher Moore's books - in a very good way。And, I loved Wil Wheaton's performance of the audiobook。 This was only my second Scalzi book and I will definitely be exploring his back list。 I had so much fun reading this book! 4。5/5 - very clever psychological villain study novel that sometimes got a little ranty

There are parts of this humorous Sci-fi ramble that I enjoyed, for sure。 The Dolphins going on strike and forming a labor union? priceless。 Maybe I would have enjoyed the written page version。 I found the choices in the audible narration too continuously emphatic and cartoonish。 It got in the way of the story itself。 I'm sure this was intentional, since the book lends itself to this。 But I'm no longer back in the sixties watching Batman。 It would have been fine if used as a way to pop in a scene There are parts of this humorous Sci-fi ramble that I enjoyed, for sure。 The Dolphins going on strike and forming a labor union? priceless。 Maybe I would have enjoyed the written page version。 I found the choices in the audible narration too continuously emphatic and cartoonish。 It got in the way of the story itself。 I'm sure this was intentional, since the book lends itself to this。 But I'm no longer back in the sixties watching Batman。 It would have been fine if used as a way to pop in a scene here and there but ugh。 Anyway。 3。5 for the audible and I bet it would have had a 4 if I'd read its pages。 Charlie's maternal uncle, a bazillionaire parking garage magnate has not been in his life because his father and uncle had a falling out at his mother's funeral when he was a tyke。 Charlie, a former business news journalist has gone the way of many newspaper writers。 To substitute teach in his home town, having returned home to care for his sick father。 His step siblings want the house sold。 He's scraping along。 And an opportunity presents itself。 His uncle died and has a very strings attached proposition for Charlie that involves his taking on roles he is ill-equipped for that involves his pet cats, some rather problematic men, an Island where mad-scientist research prevails, meetings with the problematic men that involve a lot of cats, dolphins (see above) people he trusts to help him along while great skepticism and more brains than others realize he has get him through。 Definitely laugh out loud at times。 I do NOT recommend the audio book version。 。。。more

Absolutely Delightful In Every Possible WayRead this book。 You will love it。 Then it will be finished and you will feel happy and sad simultaneously。

Mary Margaret

A surprisingly delightful mystery/action/villainy story! Enjoyed all the twists and turns

Cute story, not sure what to say here。 The author took me on a wild ride。 I finished the story in record time。 I loved the cats。 I loved the confusion of a person being thrown into villainy。 Not quite sure the negotiations were believable。 However, what is believable when the book depicts typing cat spies and talking dolphins that said fuck a lot and want to unionize。 Like I said, this book took me on a ride and I couldn’t put it down。

This is such a great story。

This cover is incredible! This is a quick, fun, inventive read - something fun from Scalzi。 I don't want to give anything away - don't even read the jacket copy, just dive in and have fun。 :)Thanks to his publisher, as I got a gratis copy at Heartland Fall Forum。 This cover is incredible! Scalzi writes with such a smooth style, infinitely readable and humors at the same time。 Starter Villain is the kind of book you pick up, and before you know it you're halfway done and wishing to read more。 It's not going to break any new ground, or introduce any mind shattering concepts, but it will provide an enjoyable reading experience。 That and its got typing cats and shit talking dolphins。 The only thing I will say is that its interesting to read Starter Villain right after finishing Sarah Scalzi writes with such a smooth style, infinitely readable and humors at the same time。 Starter Villain is the kind of book you pick up, and before you know it you're halfway done and wishing to read more。 It's not going to break any new ground, or introduce any mind shattering concepts, but it will provide an enjoyable reading experience。 That and its got typing cats and shit talking dolphins。 The only thing I will say is that its interesting to read Starter Villain right after finishing Sarah Kendzior's They Knew, which is about the real conspiracies of the super-wealthy to avoid accountability。 To go from such a heavy book to then have Scalzi make light of a bumbling cabal of global elites is some tonal whiplash that I am barely recovering from。 Starter Villain is supposed to be a lighthearted and funny read, which is it, but I can't help but also see how it trivializes the real power the ultra-wealthy have over our lives。 But then again there is a cute cat in a suit on the cover, so don't listen to my grumblings。 。。。more

I was…unsureThen I cracked it open and I was ever so pleasantly surprised。 John Scalzi is definitely one of my new favorite Authors。 His works are well written and fun。 And this is no exception。

A fun and quick read, if you enjoyed Kaiju Preservation Society and Agent to the Stars, this one is an easy recommendation。

Another absolute blast of a book from John Scalzi。 I laughed to tears in public spaces with this one。

I just finished Starter Villain by John Scalzi today。 It’s a light hearted sci-fi meets James Bond novel with talking animals。 There’s loads of humor, but it’s balanced with action and commentary on big business, government, animal welfare, and unions。
